The Saturday evening live alum spoke optimistically about the future of the franchise, specifically pointing to 2021’s success Ghostbusters: Afterlife and 2024 Ghostbusters: Frozen Empireboth starring Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace and Paul Rudd.
“They have a whole new cast and whole new ideas,” he continued. “I think they’ll probably continue to push it beyond the originals, which they should do.”
Aykroyd played paranormal investigator Ray Stantz in the original Ghostbusters film, hunting for ghosts alongside fellow ghostbusters Murray, 74, Ernie Hudson, 78, and the late Harold Ramis, who died in 2014 at the age of 69.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE earlier this year, Aykroyd fervently defended the 2016 episode, which received mixed reviews at the time.
“I liked the movie [director] Paul Feig made with those spectacular women,” he said. “I was mad at them at the time because I had to be a producer there, not doing my job and not arguing about costs. And it may have cost more than it should have, and they all do.”
“But boy, I liked that movie,” he continued. “I loved the villain at the end. I loved it so much. And of course, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones and Melissa McCarthy and Kristen Wiig, you’ll never do better than that. So I’m going to go through the record says I I’m so proud that I was able to license that film and have a role in it, and I fully support it, and I’m not besmirching it at all works really great among all that have been made.”
